Last year we took you on a tour of discovery to NEC Australia's 3G Mobile R&D and DSL laboratories. This year we took you on a discovery tour of Australia's leading telecommunications and information services company: Telstra. There we saw how a world-class telecommunication network operates at their Global Operations Centre -- routing 65 million calls and 8.5 million SMSs daily -- then we went on to see what new innovations are happening at their Research Labs. As the end of 2004 approached, we had one final get-together to celebrate! Partners were welcome for an evening of scrumptious food, good wine, delicate delights, and great company. Check out the photos from the event! This end-of-year dinner also coincided with our Annual General Meeting and Polling Meeting for the annual executive committee election. Congratulations goes to the new execuitive for 2005: Jennifer Che (Chair), Nishaanthan Nadarajah (Vice-Chair), Genevieve Coath (Secretary), Masud Bakaul (Treasurer). Additionally, a job well done to the recipients of the various prizes awarded on the night! |

The branch had a day out at the MCG on Boxing Day for members and friends of the branch to see Australia take on Pakistan in the second test. It was a great day of cricket close to the pitch and well enjoyed by all. |

In this LaTeX workshop, we taught attendees how to produce great looking professional typeset documents in LaTeX, including how to write conference/journal papers in the IEEE style. This was the second time we've run such an intensive-mode and we had a full house -- view the photos on-line! |

The Australian Centre for RF Bioeffects Research is putting up multiple $2,000 prizes for any Australian University undergraduate student completing a substantial research or design project (e.g. Honours, Final year or 3 semester project) this year on the topic of radiofrequency bioeffects, dosimetry or safety. We hosted a tour to discover one of Australia's largest employers of R&D engineers in the communications area: NEC Australia. Visitors saw and talked with real engineers in the 3rd Generation (3G) Mobile and Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) groups and went on a half-day tour of the facilities. Best of all, the event was free, including bus transport to and from the lab. |

The Case Study Competition will test the competing teams' skills of analysis, logic and creativity to the limit. Teams of 3-4 people will be competing for the $200 prize. 2004 R10 Branch Website Competition Result

We've been awarded second prize and a $US350 cheque in the Region 10 Student Branch Website Competition for 2004. The first prize winner was the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia student branch, while third prize went to the Thadomal Shahani Engineering College student branch. If you think we can improve, please and our webmaster will get right on it. First prize winners of the regional competition are entered into the inter-region (world-wide) competition -- our goal is to compete on a global scale with the best of them! |

On Monday 25 November, the branch hosted a successful general meeting for all members. The current committee members outlined their current roles and responsibilities in addition to sketching a brief plan of future branch activities. All in attendance then enjoyed a great selection of complimentary pizza and drinks. A copy of the presentation slides (PDF) are available on-line for those who were unable to attend the meeting. |

The University of Melbourne IEEE Student Chapter was launched on 23 August 2002 with the help of a number of special guests including Professor Rod Tucker (UniMelb), Associate Professor Doreen Thomas (UniMelb) and Mr. Peter Wills (IEEE Vic.
