First Annual Case Study Competition

Sponsored by Telstra Research Labs

This event has elapsed for 2004. We welcome you to our next Case Study competition in 2005!

The UniMelb IEEE Student Branch is proud to bring you the First Annual Case Study Competition.

Do you like challenging problems? With real-world settings? That don't have cut-and-dried, text-book solutions? Do you enjoy using analytical and creative skills simultaneously to generate solutions where none existed before? Do you enjoy working under pressure with a team of motivated, talented people and seeing your work used to influence others?

If you answered yes to the above questions, then the Case Study Competition is for you!

In the Case Study Competition you'll be given two hours to solve a complex business problem with an engineering focus that will stretch your powers of analysis and creativity. There are no right answers and each team will need to make a convincing and effective presentation of their solution to the judges in order to win.

For Competitors

Solving business cases requires strong problem solving and logic skills, as well as the ability to determine which parts of the problem and which pieces of information are most relevant and useful. An organised, structured, methodical approach will be beneficial in synthesising your solution. However, creating a solution is not enough. In a real-life situation, you must convince others to implement your ideas. Thus your success in the competition will depend critically on the 15 minute presentation you give to our panel of judges:

  • Assoc. Prof. Neville Norman, Commerce Faculty, University of Melbourne.
  • Assoc. Prof. Peter Farrell, Engineering Faculty, University of Melbourne.
  • Callan Schebella, M. Eng., Manager, Telstra Research Labs Commercial Section.
  • Joe Younane, M.B.A. - Macquarie, is a Director of Redfern Photonics Pty Ltd and Principal of Technology Venture Resources Pty Ltd.

We hope you'll find this competition a good opportunity to learn how to think about and solve business problems, to gain experience in organising and presenting your ideas, and to get feedback and advice from people with extensive business experience.
